problem statement
Our goals were: to compare two courses in life, financially, represent the difference in "total amount made in my lifetime" based on those two paths; as well as to make a presentation for our parents and to actually present to them.
the process
Our first step in the final part of this project was to think of three separate paths that we could compare the lifetime earnings in a graph. The first career path that I chose was a Pastry Chef with no college education.(Fun fact: I was really into baking and decorating cakes during the end of elementary and throughout middle school so during that time I wanted to be a pastry chef) Then, I compared the pastry chef to an Interior Design major who attended Cal State University Long Beach and lastly, a Business Major after an education at Cal Poly Pomona. With that information we created a graph in google spreadsheets. Afterwards, we were required to make a presentation, "Is college really worth it?" about our top 3 colleges we want to attend, insert that graph, and explain to our parents how the loans will work for each of our top 3 colleges. Once we finished that, we presented our final presentation to our parents.
the solution
self ASSESSMENT
I'm glad we worked on this project. It helped clarify the reasons why I would like to go to my top 3 colleges, to my parents. I presented to my Father. He seemed interested but he's mostly a listener. My dad is really supportive and was happy with where I wanted to go and my reasoning behind it. What was the most helpful was the financial part of my presentation, I got to explain to my dad how the loans work, and how the loan calculator was created. He was happy that we've did something in class that was helpful to our life. As I've gotten older, I've realized my parents financial state. It can be hard sometimes to not feel guilty for making my parents pay for my brother and I.
Throughout this 3rd part, I practiced the quality: Experimenting and justifying. We had to pick only our top 3 college choices and make a case to our parents as to why college is worth it. The experimenting came into play when I had to choose my top 3 colleges by inserting the information into my graph and trying to find out the best outcome to use on my career comparison chart. Then, I had to justify why the qualities I look for in a college is worth applying to each school.
